about

These songs come to us from a variety of different sources and contexts, but we love the way they all weave together. Becky learned Give Me Wings at a choral workshop, and Mel Novner had the brilliant idea to tell Nicole to make up some harmonies to it. Been in the Storm is an African-American lament that we learned from Allison Kelley and Ken Schatz, and I Will Meet You in the City (Jerusalem, My Happy Home) is a hymn we learned from Helen Schneyer’s album On the Hallelujah Line.

lyrics

Give me wings in the morning, so that I can fly
Give me wings in the morning, so that I can fly
Give me wings so I can rise above this poor sorry world
Give me wings, give me wings, give me wings

Been in the storm so long
Been in the storm so long
Oh lord, give me more time to pray

[chorus]
And I will meet you in the city of the new Jerusalem
I am washed in the blood of the Lamb
I will meet you in the city of the new Jerusalem
I am washed in the blood of the Lamb

Jerusalem, my happy home,
O how I long for thee!
When will my sorrows have an end,
Thy joys when shall I see?

Thy walls are built of precious stone,
So wond'rous to behold;
Thy gates are set with shining pearls,
Thy streets are paved with gold.

Come down, come down, thine arms of grace,
And cause me to ascend.
Where congregations ne'er break up,
And praises never end.
